The Washington DC neighbourhood of Brightwood is located in the north-west of the capital, today bounded by Brightwood Park, Fort Totten and Rock Creek. However, back in the middle of the 19th century the neighbourhood was better known for its racetrack. The 4 furlong oval Crystal Spring track first opened for racing in 1859 and continued to offer equestrian entertainment for the area until 1909. Although it hosted a variety of forms of racing over time, including motor racing and bicycle racing, the track became known as Brightwood Trotting Park. At one time in its history it was renamed Piney Branch Park Racecourse before it reverted to Brightwood Trotting Park. However, arguably its most famous incident was not connected to racing but to the Racetrack being used as a camp by thousands of unemployed people as they marched towards Washington to protest at the economic crash which had left so many people unemployed and destitute. The racecourse gates closed for the final time in 1909. |
